What is Hindustani Classical Music

Indian Classical Music is divided into two subgenres: Hindustani Classical Music, which evolved in the northern parts of India and Carnatic
Music, which is traditionally followed in the Southern regions of India. Both genres have developed over thousands of years and are an integral
part of Indian culture.

Hindustani Music is founded on the system of Ragas, which are melodic scales with different combinations of the basic 7 notes sung to a
rhythmic cycle called a Taal.

While pursuing a degree in Hindustani Classical Music, I realized that the academic material in the subject is spread across various texts and the information available online is very basic and not suffice for theory papers, which are an essential part of the course. Most of the information is available only in Hindi and this deters many people who are not fluent in the language from pursuing Classical Music at an academic level. So, I decided to create this website which provides all necessary academic material required for the degree course.

I would like to thank my guru, Pandit. Ila Doshi, who provided constant guidance and support throughout the process of creating this website. Though this website has been primarily created for academic purposes, I welcome all music enthusiasts to make use of this resource.
